URL and Domain Name info

Anatomy of a URL

The URL is the address of a resource, or file, available on the Internet. URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. The URL contains the protocol of the website (e.g. http: or ftp:), the domain name for the resource, and the hierarchical name for the file (address).

For example, when I want to visit , the URL (or specific web address - just like the address used to send a letter to your grandmother) is: http://www.google.com/

• The beginning part: http: provides the protocol.
• The next part www.google.com is the domain
• the google.com is the main domain//
• while www is a pointer to a computer or a resource.

Then, when I want to get some information using I get a different URL:
When I type in the word 'cat' into the search field of Google, and tap return, I get this URL which contains all the choices or Hits for my search:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&gbv=2&q=cat&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

• The part after .com:, /search?hl=en&gbv=2&q=cat&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai= is the pointer to the specific files on that server.

All about the 'extention' of the domain name:

.com Commercial - means a business
.net infrastructure
.org non-profit
.edu schools
.info informational
.biz small business
.name personal sites (ie .johnadams)
